PMMA Extruded Sheet vs Cast Sheet

In the production of acrylic sheets, PMMA sheets are primarily manufactured using two distinct processes: extrusion and casting. Each process yields materials with unique characteristics, and these differing production methods directly influence the material’s performance in end-use applications such as bathtubs and spa tubs.

Extruded PMMA Sheet:

Extruded acrylic sheets are produced by continuously forcing molten PMMA resin through a die opening, thereby forming a sheet of uniform thickness.
Key Features:
Consistent thickness control and precise dimensions
Lower production costs
Suitable for large-scale mass production
Suitable for basic thermoforming applications
Limitations:
Lower molecular weight
Slightly weaker impact resistance
Higher internal stress in certain instances
Not suitable for high-end or deep-formed (deep-drawn) products

Cast PMMA Sheet:

Cast acrylic sheets are produced by pouring liquid PMMA monomer into a mold, where it undergoes slow polymerization and curing within the mold cavity.
Key Features:
Higher molecular weight
Superior optical clarity
Greater impact resistance
Lower internal stress
Exceptional thermoforming performance
Advantages in Bathtub Production:
Greater deep-drawing (deep-forming) capability
Lower risk of cracking during the forming process
Surface quality remains stable after heating
The preferred material for manufacturing high-end bathtubs
